What Are Dermal Fillers?
This page describes hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers, which add volume and support facial contours. Other injectable products, including collagen stimulators, use different materials and have different properties. Unlike wrinkle relaxers, which address movement-based lines, fillers work by physically replacing lost volume and supporting facial contours. Volume changes may be visible immediately, although swelling can temporarily affect their appearance. HA filler can often be reduced with hyaluronidase, but complete reversal is not guaranteed.

What to Expect
Most filler appointments take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the areas treated. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, and most fillers also contain lidocaine for added comfort during the injection. Swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness can occur and may last days to weeks. Your provider will explain activity restrictions, expected recovery, and symptoms that require urgent attention. Rare complications can be serious, including vascular occlusion, tissue injury, and vision loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will I see results?
Volume changes are often visible immediately. The appearance settles as swelling resolves, which can take days to weeks depending on the product, treatment area, and individual response.
How long do results last?
Depending on the type of filler and treatment area, results typically last 6 to 18 months. Lips tend to metabolize filler slightly faster than other areas due to frequent movement.
Is it painful?
Most clients experience minimal discomfort. Numbing cream is applied before treatment, and most fillers contain lidocaine to further reduce sensation during the injection.
Can filler be reversed?
HA fillers can often be reduced using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. More than one treatment may be needed, and complete reversal is not guaranteed. Dissolving carries its own risks and does not reliably reverse every complication. Non-HA fillers and collagen stimulators cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
Who is a good candidate?
Most adults bothered by volume loss, hollowing, or loss of facial definition are good candidates. A consultation allows us to assess your anatomy and determine whether filler is the most appropriate starting point for your goals.
